Campaign driver’s murder raises fresh poll violence concerns

…as civic group condemns Magoye killing, calls for suspension of the campaigns in the constituency

THE Civil Society Elections Integrity Forum Zambia has described the murder of Mr Steven Sakala, a driver for independent candidate for Magoye East Confucious Mweene, as a grave act of political violence that threatens peaceful elections in the constituency.

It said it was deeply saddened by the killing, which reportedly happened at a campaign centre in Magoye and is suspected to be politically motivated.

Its representative Ms Nakiwe Simpungwe said the incident was a painful reminder of the dangers political violence continues to pose to the country’s democratic process.

“This tragic incident is not only a devastating loss to the family and community of Mr Sakala, but also a stark reminder of the dangers that political violence poses to our democracy, our peace and the safety of ordinary citizens,” Ms Simpungwe said in a statement.

The organisation called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia to immediately suspend all campaign activities in Magoye East until investigations are concluded and security is guaranteed.

“We urge the ECZ to take immediate and decisive action by suspending all campaign activities in Magoye East while thorough investigations are conducted and safety measures are put in place,” Ms Simpungwe said.
