…says he has not received any salary since he ascended to office of the presidency, apologises for wrong adoptions in the UPND. By MUBITA KATETE PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says he is the first head of State in the country’s history to never receive a salary as head of State yet he has been tirelessly working for the Zambian. President Hichilema said he came as a “missionary” to serve and work for Zambians. Speaking when he arrived in Choma on a working visit, President Hichilema said he was committed to serving the people and delivering development across the country. “I am a missionary. That is why we brought free education, the Constituency Development Fund and employment opportunities for teachers. No other government has employed 45, 000 teachers in four years and 10 months,” President Hichilema said. Mr Hichilema said his administration had worked hard to improve the economy, reduce debt burdens and promote national unity. “This country is now working in a united way. Those who are complaining are people who were eating. Don’t be misled, otherwise you will drown,” he said. He also questioned the return of former leaders to power, stating that they were responsible for the country’s debt challenges. “Those who brought the debt want to come back and do what?” he asked. President Hichilema also apologised to UPND members in areas where the adoption process had not gone smoothly. “If something goes wrong, I don’t hide. I’m the President of the Republic of Zambia. I apologise for the adoptions which didn’t go well in certain areas,” he said. Mr Hichilema also urged residents of Choma to vote for UPND candidates at all levels in the August 13 general elections, saying electing councillors, mayors, MPs and the President from the same party would help government operate more effectively.
