SMEs get major lift as Kansanshi invests in local enterprise growth

KANSANSHI Mining PLC has invested approximately K17.6 million in local enterprise development, handing over machinery and productive assets to beneficiaries of its Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Accelerator Programme to strengthen small businesses and create sustainable livelihoods in North-Western Province.

The equipment was presented to SMEs in Solwezi as part of the company’s broader investment in citizen economic empowerment and sustainable community development.

Kansanshi Mining PLC Assistant General Manager Axel Kottgen said the company’s commitment to supporting local enterprise development extends beyond its mining operations and is anchored on building resilient local economies.

“At Kansanshi Mining PLC, we firmly believe that sustainable development extends beyond mining. It includes empowering local businesses, building entrepreneurial capacity, creating jobs and fostering economic resilience within our communities,” Mr Kottgen said during the handover ceremony.

He said the programme was established to identify promising entrepreneurs, strengthen their business capacity and provide targeted support to help them expand and participate meaningfully in the local economy.

Mr Kottgen disclosed that 17 SMEs had been selected for support following rigorous assessments based on their potential for growth, job creation and sustainability.

The businesses operate in sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, water bottling, cleaning services, metal fabrication, leather production, food processing and poultry farming.

He added that the current phase of the programme represents an investment of approximately K17.6 million, which would enable beneficiaries to acquire machinery, transport solutions, production inputs, solar systems and other critical assets.

Kansanshi Foundation Manager Simon Keevil said the equipment would enhance productivity, improve product quality, create employment opportunities and strengthen local supply chains in the province.

He also welcomed the participation of women- and youth-owned enterprises, saying the programme reflects the company’s commitment to inclusive economic growth and shared prosperity through mentorship, market linkages and business development support.

North-Western Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Luckson Mulumbi commended the initiative, describing SMEs as key drivers of economic growth, innovation and industrialisation.

Mr Mulumbi said the government remained committed to promoting partnerships between the private sector, communities and public institutions to support entrepreneurship, reduce poverty and improve household incomes across the country.
