Violence pops up in Mandevu

…as police hunt suspects over an attack on Tonse Pamodzi Alliance supporters whose property worth K81, 500 was damaged, stolen.

POLICE in Lusaka are looking for suspects allegedly involved in violence resulting to malicious damage to property and theft following a political disturbance at Mutambe Ground in Mandevu Township.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, around 15 hours, allegedly targeted supporters of the Tonse Pamodzi Alliance who had gathered for a meeting.

According to a statement issued by Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi, the matter was reported to Emmasdale Police Station at about 19 hours by Godwin Phiri, 30, of Zanimuone West.

Mr Phiri, an aspiring Tonse Pamodzi Alliance candidate for Chaisa Ward 23, alleged that supporters attending the meeting were attacked by a group suspected to be supporters of the ruling UPND.

Police said preliminary investigations indicate that the confrontation resulted in extensive property damage and theft.

Mr Phiri reported that his silver Mercedes Benz car registration number AHC 744 was significantly damagedwith its fuel tank contaminated with sugar and sand.

He also reported the theft of K20, 000 cash, 100 Tonse Pamodzi Alliance T-shirts and 50 campaign caps.

The total value of the stolen and damaged property has been estimated at K81, 500.

In the same incident, two teachers' houses at Mutambe Primary School had their window panes damaged, while a maroon Toyota Runnnel registration number BAL 2254 belonging to Brighton Musungule, 42, a taxi driver of Zanimuone West, was also vandalised.

Police officers rushed to the scene after receiving the report but found that the alleged perpetrators had already fled the scene.

“Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend all persons involved. The Zambia Police Service has intensified efforts to bring the suspects to justice,” Mr Chilabi said.
