A THIRTY-YEAR-OLD man of Matero Township in Lusaka is being held by police in connection with the alleged murder of his five-year-old nephew.
Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said the suspect, identified as Clayton Phiri, is alleged to have strangled the child, Samuel Phiri, causing fatal injuries to the neck.
According to police, the incident occurred on July 6, 2026, around 20 hours and was reported to Matero Police Station shortly after midnight on July 7.
Mr Chilabi said preliminary investigations indicate that a neighbour heard people calling for help and rushed outside to check what was happening.
“When he went outside, he allegedly found the suspect strangling the child. Members of the public immediately intervened, restrained the suspect, and rushed the child to George Clinic, where he was pronounced dead,” Mr Chilabi said.
He said that the child’s body has been deposited at the University Teaching Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
“The suspect remains in police custody, and investigations are ongoing. The motive for the alleged offence has not yet been established,” he said.
