Britain commits to youth empowerment via Duke of Edinburgh award

By MUBITA KATETE REBECCA Terzeon, the British High Commissioner has pledged to support youth development in Zambia after accepting appointment as deputy patron of the The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Zambia, describing the programme as a powerful tool for building confidence, resilience and leadership among young people. Speaking during the appointment ceremony, Ms. Terzeon reflected on her own experience completing the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award in England, saying the programme played an important role in shaping her personal growth and career path. “I never imagined the impact that experience would have on my life or the subtle role it would play in the career path that led me to becoming British High Commissioner here in Zambia. But that is the power of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award,” she said. Ms. Terzeon said it was an honour to accept the role and contribute to supporting the next generation of young people as they develop critical life skills through the programme. She noted that the award helps young people build confidence, resilience, teamwork and problem-solving abilities, skills she said are essential in navigating an increasingly complex and changing world. According to Ms. Terzeon, youth development remains central to national progress, adding that initiatives such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award complement Zambia’s broader ambitions of empowering young people across the country. “At its heart, this Award is about opportunity, giving young Zambians the chance to challenge themselves, discover what they are capable of, and build the skills needed to shape their future,” she said. She also said the programme represents the strength of the partnership between United Kingdom and Zambia, particularly in advancing shared goals around youth empowerment, education and opportunity. Ms. Terzeon also commended organisations including Sport in Action and volunteers working to expand access to the programme, especially in underserved communities. She said she looks forward to helping raise the visibility of the award and inspiring more young people across Zambia to participate. “Every young person who completes this Award represents an investment, not just in their own future, but in the future of their community and their country. I am hugely proud to join you in this work, and I look forward to what we can achieve together,” Ms. Terzeon said. Ends.
