THE mining sector has been identified as a key driver of Zambia’s energy transition, accounting for 63 percent of the country’s total electricity consumption.
According to the Energy Regulation Board’s 2025 Annual Statistical Bulletin, the industry consumed 9,785.37 GWh of electricity and spends an estimated US$1 billion annually on power, making it the largest contributor to revenues in the energy sector.
Energy Consultant Dr Johnstone Chikwanda said mining companies played a crucial role during the 2023/2024 energy crisis by managing demand and sourcing power independently.
He noted that First Quantum Minerals imported more than half of its electricity requirements, easing pressure on ZESCO, while other mining firms secured regional power supplies to sustain operations and support copper production targets.
Dr Chikwanda added that the sector is also supporting renewable energy development and power infrastructure investments through projects such as the Chisamba Solar Project, Kitumba Solar Plant and Lumwana Mine upgrades.
He said with Zambia targeting three million tonnes of copper production by 2031, continued investment by the mining industry will be essential in expanding electricity generation, strengthening grid resilience and driving economic growth.
