‘We’ll sue individual police officers’ – Saboi

…believes there is a deliberate ploy by the regime to use the police to intimidate, disturb meaningful engagements with the electorate, warns police officers carrying out illegal instructions that they will account for their actions individually

POLICE are messing up democracy and soon politicians and other aggrieved citizens will begin to take legal action against individual officers for executing unlawful actions, Saboi Imboela has said.

Ms Imboela, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) president who is in the Orange Alliance under Harry Kalaba’s Citizens First said in an interview that many senior police officers were committing illegalities knowing that they were not individually liable but soon, things will change.

She said it was clear police are bringing confusion into political activities ahead of the August 13, general election, with campaigns by various political parties and independent candidates taking place across the country.

“We will soon start suing some of these police officers in their individual capacities for carrying out illegal instructions. For those in the top command, we will report them to international human rights organisations and other relevant international bodies,” Ms Imboela said.

She said the Orange Alliance was appalled by the action of police officers as the nation nears its general election.

“The police are messing up our country’s constitutional multi-party democracy which by now should have matured. Some of these police officers think they are covered under the law but soon, individual top police officers will be answerable in their individual capacities,” Ms Imboela said.

Ms Imboela is not participating in this year’s general election but has thrown her weight behind Mr Kalaba.

She said it was strange that police were trailing Mr Kalaba and herself in Western Province and at some point, even picked the Citizens First leader.

“Can you imagine they (Police) even stopped our paid for radio programme in Mongu? In some cases, police officers would arrive much earlier than our team. This is clearly one of the ploys by this regime to cause confusion and cause fear amongst the lectorate,” Ms Imboela said.
