SA’s Intelligence Transfer Centre extol MUZ president

THE Intelligence Transfer Centre (ITC) of South Africa has described Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) president Joseph Chewe as one of Africa’s leading advocates for worker rights, labour justice, and fair employment practices within strategic industries.

The ITC has since invited Mr Chewe to deliver a keynote address at the 13th annual Shop Steward and Labour Relations Conference Africa 2026, scheduled to take place from August 26–27, 2026 at the Emperors Palace Convention Centre in Johannesburg.

The invitation also recognises Mr Chewe’s distinguished leadership as president of MUZ and First Deputy President of the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU).

In its invitation letter, the ITC described Mr Chewe as one of Africa’s leading advocates for worker rights, labour justice, and fair employment practices within strategic industries.

The organisation noted that “his contributions to advancing collective bargaining, decent work standards, and job security and worker protection in the mining sector have played a pivotal role in strengthening labour relations across the region.

According to the invitation letter, Mr Chewe’s keynote address will focus on three key themes: The Future of Labour Relations in African Economies; Cross-Border Labour Migration and Worker Protection; and Artificial Intelligence, Automation and the Future of Work.

Commenting on the invitation, Mr Chewe said he was humbled by the invitation and that the opportunity reflects the growing recognition of the role African trade unions play in shaping the future of work on the continent.

 “I am both humbled and honored to have been invited to address this important continental gathering. It is an opportunity to share experiences from Zambia’s mining sector and contribute to discussions on how labour movements can effectively respond to emerging challenges and opportunities in the world of work,” Mr Chewe said.

The Intelligence Transfer Centre is a skills development, research and capacity-building organization that facilitates conferences, workshops and training programmes aimed at helping governments and private institutions achieve high standards of education, governance and organisational performance across the continent.
