By MUBITA KATETE THOSE contesting the August 13 general election should focus on what solutions they will provide once elected into office and pledge to be as transparent and fair as possible, former Attorney General Musa Mwenye has said. Speaking on Hot FM radio, Mr. Mwenye said political parties, particularly the ruling UPND should avoid unnecessary attacks on the opposition and instead allow citizens to assess leadership based on promises made and achievements delivered. “Campaigns should be centred on issues that matter to citizens. Government must allow people to judge its performance based on the commitments it made and be transparent in explaining what has been achieved so far,” Mr. Mwenye said. He said political discourse should move away from repeated attacks on the Patriotic Front, noting that the two political groupings remain “alliance partners” and should avoid creating unnecessary tensions in the political space. Mr. Mwenye also said the opposition must be given a fair opportunity to campaign freely in the lead-up to the election, pointing out that a level political playing field remains critical for strengthening democracy. Meanwhile, Mr. Mwenye said there is an urgent need for government to intensify the fight against high-level corruption and ensure allegations involving senior public officials are fully investigated. He expressed concern that despite ongoing anti-corruption efforts, there have been no notable prosecutions involving senior government officials under the current administration. “The fight against corruption cannot only target lower-level offenders. Allegations involving senior government officials must be investigated to their logical conclusion because accountability at the highest levels is essential for public trust,” he said. Mr. Mwenye said strengthening the fight against corruption remains vital in promoting transparency in public office and ensuring prudent use of public resources.
