No sacred cows in copper cathodes theft - Kawana

GOVERNMENT has reaffirmed its commitment to accountability, integrity and the protection of national resources following the arrest and prosecution of individuals allegedly involved in the theft and unlawful handling of copper cathodes recovered in Mufulira.

In a statement issued yesterday, Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana said Government remained resolute in ensuring that all criminal acts were dealt with in line with the law.

“Government has noted the action taken by law enforcement authorities to investigate and bring before the courts of law individuals alleged to be involved in the theft and unlawful handling of copper cathodes recovered in Mufulira,” Mr Kawana said.

He said the protection of national resources, public assets and private property remained one of Government’s key responsibilities.

“Government considers the protection of national resources, public assets, and private property as a fundamental responsibility and remains unwavering in ensuring that all acts of criminality are dealt with in accordance with the law,” he said.

Mr Kawana said the developments demonstrated Government’s commitment to promoting accountability, transparency and good governance by ensuring allegations of wrongdoing were thoroughly investigated and subjected to the appropriate legal process.

He stressed that the law applied equally to every citizen regardless of status.

“Government wishes to emphasise that the law applies equally to all citizens and that no individual is above the law,” he said.

Mr Kawana added that public confidence in national institutions could only be maintained through accountability and high standards of integrity.

“There will be no tolerance for theft, corruption, abuse of authority, or any conduct that undermines Zambia’s economic interests and the confidence of citizens in institutions established to serve and protect them,” Mr Kawana said.

“Government remains committed to ensuring that all investigations and prosecutions are conducted fairly, independently, and in accordance with constitutional principles, including respect for the rights of all persons before the law,” he said.
