Employer cartels violating labour laws, says Gov’t

GOVERNMENT has expressed concern over the emergence of employer cartels and informal platforms that are suppressing labour standards and discouraging employee mobility in some sectors.

Ministry of Labour and Social Security Permanent Secretary Zechariah Luhanga said the developments are inconsistent with the principles of decent work and respect for workers’ rights.

Speaking at the launch of the recognition agreement for the transport sector, trade unions and employers’ associations in Lusaka, Mr. Luhanga however expressed delight at the launch of the recognition agreement, describing it as both timely and significant.

He explained that the agreement will reduce fragmentation, strengthen workers’ voices and facilitate more effective engagement with employers and government.

“As government, we remain committed to ensuring that every worker operates in an environment where their rights are protected and where employers uphold fair and lawful labour practices,” Mr. Luhanga said.

And Zambia Congress of Trade Unions president Blake Mulala has called for total respect of labour laws among transport sector employers.

At the same event, Truckers Association of Zambia Vice Chairperson Patrick Malindi pledged full commitment to the recognition agreement.
