GOVERNMENT has completed the construction of eight roads under Lot 3 of the Lusaka Urban Road Project aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving road safety in Lusaka.

The completed roads, which cover more than 11 kilometres out of the 16 roads earmarked for rehabilitation and upgrading to bituminous standard, are now awaiting full operational use following the installation of road furniture such as road signs and other safety features.

Lusaka City Council Public Relations Officer Ms Chola Mwamba said the completed roads include Lady Diana Road, Fred Joe Road, Chila Road, Gizenga Road, Khola-Chabisa Road, Mahopo 1 Road, Mahopo 2 Road and Mahopo 3 Road.

Ms Mwamba said the works are being undertaken by Scirocco Enterprises Limited under the supervision of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development through the Lusaka City Council.

“The completed roads form part of the Government’s efforts to improve road infrastructure and reduce traffic congestion in Lusaka,” she said.

She added that construction is continuing on the remaining roads, including Serval Street, New Kasama Road and Sable Road Extension–Alick Nkhata Road.

Ms Mwamba also said works on Heart Hospital Road, Chunga Road, Ibex Hill Road and Chipopolo Road are yet to commence.

She also said works on UNZA Road have been suspended to allow the government to upgrade the sewerage system in the area.

According to the LCC, engineers from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, the local authority and the project consultant recently conducted an inspection to assess progress and ensure compliance with engineering specifications, contractual obligations and quality standards.
